Nicola Agenbag, Physiotherapist
One of the best massages I’ve had. Sharn is knowledgeable, attentive and works holistically to address her client’s issues. I saw her for neck pain and tension and felt completely safe in her hands. Her combination of strong and yet gentle left my neck feeling great with no soreness after the session. Would HIGHLY recommend!

I've had two massages with Sharn so far and they were both exceptionally good. There was a quality to them I find hard to define but that I’ve never experienced before. Extremely relaxing and somehow just « hitting the right spot ». I found Sharn very professional and highly skilled. I would recommend her very highly - and will certainly return!
Odile Hufkie
Sharn is a therapeutic magician! Having suffered from back pain for many years, made worse through pregnancy - I tried many options - from chiropractors to cortisone shots and massage, but nothing seemed to alleviate the chronic pain. She managed to treat pain that I thought I would have to live with for the rest of my life! She is extremely knowledgable and explains her customised process, in an understandable manner. Sharn is my new body guru - she has changed my life!

MASSAGE AS PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CARE

Massage therapy is a powerful, evidence-based health intervention that supports the body’s natural healing process. While it’s not a cure for all conditions, it improves quality of life, reduces pain, and supports long-term health by affecting every system of the body for better function.
People usually seek massage therapy to address pain, improve sports performance, or simply to destress, but I aim to educate my patients on the endless benefits massage has for overall health, and to manage specific health conditions.
In short - a primary issue we all face in modern life is stress, which you may know as "fight or flight" response. This specific state of your nervous system - called sympathetic dominance- can significantly harm your long-term health. When in fight or flight, cortisol is released. This hormone is helpful to the mind and body when we need to be stimulated to react to immediate danger, but harmful when it suppresses basic functions in favour of dealing with stress. The sympathetic nervous system is essential for survival in short bursts, but chronic activation due to stress, poor lifestyle, or trauma leads to widespread dysfunction. So while you may book a massage appointment with a specific goal in mind - IE removing lower back pain, I always stress the importance of reaching a state of deep parasympathetic dominance during the treatment - the state of the nervous system that activates rest, healing, digestion, and immune activation.
Here are some of the effects of stress/sympathetic dominance on your physiology and overall health:

Physiological Effects of Sympathetic Dominance/Fight or Flight

Cardiovascular System

Increased Heart Rate & Blood Pressure → Chronic activation can lead to hypertension, heart strain, and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (e.g., heart attacks, strokes).
Vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) → Decreases blood flow to digestive organs and skin, contributing to cold extremities, poor digestion, and slow healing.

Endocrine System & Metabolism

Increased Cortisol & Adrenaline Release → Leads to chronic inflammation, immune suppression, and insulin resistance (higher risk of diabetes).
Elevated Blood Sugar Levels → The body releases more glucose for energy, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic disorders.
Digestive System

Reduced Digestive Enzyme Secretion → Leads to bloating, indigestion, and poor nutrient absorption.
Slowed Gut Motility → Can cause constipation or, in some cases, diarrhea due to gut-brain dysfunction.
Weakened Gut Lining → Increases risk of leaky gut syndrome, food sensitivities, and inflammation.

Musculoskeletal System

Chronic Muscle Tension → Causes headaches, jaw clenching (TMJ disorders), neck/back pain, and fibromyalgia-like symptoms.
Increased Risk of Injury → Tense muscles are more prone to strains and injuries.
Respiratory System

Shallow, Rapid Breathing → Reduces oxygen exchange, leading to fatigue, dizziness, and increased anxiety.
Overuse of Accessory Breathing Muscles → Can contribute to chronic neck and shoulder pain.
Nervous System & Mental Health

Anxiety & Panic Attacks → Continuous activation keeps the brain in a hypervigilant, reactive state, making relaxation difficult.
Poor Sleep Quality → High cortisol levels disrupt melatonin production, leading to insomnia and unrefreshing sleep.
Cognitive Decline → Chronic stress affects memory and concentration, increasing risk of brain fog, ADHD-like symptoms, and dementia.
Immune System

Suppressed Immune Function → Higher susceptibility to infections, autoimmune diseases, and slow wound healing.
Increased Inflammation → Can worsen conditions like arthritis, skin disorders (eczema, psoriasis), and cardiovascular disease.

Health Risks of Prolonged Sympathetic Dominance:

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Burnout due to adrenal exhaustion.
Cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, heart disease, strokes).
Metabolic disorders (diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance).
Autoimmune conditions due to prolonged immune dysregulation.
Neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s).
Gastrointestinal disorders (IBS, ulcers, leaky gut).
In parasympathetic dominance, your nervous system signals that you are safe and therefore able to prioritise important functions, like waste removal, and other processes of balance and healing - for this reason, it is also called "rest and digest" response. Relaxing isn't only beneficial because it feels good, but also because it is essential for getting the"housework and cleaning" done in your body. Research has shown that massage is significantly more effective to systemic health than simply relaxing or meditating, as specific endorphins are released by touch.
Here are some of the benefits of relaxing massage:

Positive Physiological Effects of Deep Relaxation
(Parasympathetic Dominance)
Cardiovascular System
-
Lower Heart Rate & Blood Pressure → Reduces strain on the heart, decreasing the risk of hypertension, heart disease, and strokes.
-
Improved Circulation → Blood vessels relax, increasing blood flow to organs, muscles, and extremities (warm hands and feet).
Digestive System
-
Enhanced Digestion & Nutrient Absorption → Increased secretion of digestive enzymes, bile, and stomach acid allows for better breakdown of food and nutrient uptake.
-
Healthy Gut Motility → Smooth muscle activity in the intestines improves, preventing constipation and bloating.
-
Reduced Inflammation in the Gut → Supports a healthy microbiome and protects against leaky gut syndrome and IBS.
Endocrine System & Metabolism
-
Balanced Hormones → Lower cortisol levels lead to improved insulin sensitivity, stable blood sugar, and reduced inflammation.
-
Increased Production of Growth & Repair Hormones → Supports muscle recovery, skin healing, and overall tissue regeneration.
-
Better Thyroid Function → Encourages optimal metabolism and energy production.
Nervous System & Mental Health
-
Reduced Anxiety & Stress → A calm nervous system promotes feelings of safety, relaxation, and emotional balance.
-
Improved Memory & Focus → Cognitive function enhances as the brain gets proper oxygen and blood flow.
-
Better Sleep Quality → Increased melatonin production leads to deeper, more restorative sleep.
Respiratory System
-
Slower, Deeper Breathing → Increases oxygen intake, improves lung function, and enhances relaxation.
-
Diaphragmatic Activation → Engages the diaphragm properly, preventing shallow breathing and tension in the neck/shoulders.
Musculoskeletal System
Muscle Relaxation & Recovery → Reduces chronic tension, pain, and inflammation in the muscles and joints.
Better Posture & Flexibility → Without constant stress-induced contraction, muscles become more supple and functional.
Immune System
Boosted Immune Function → Allows the body to focus on fighting infections and healing wounds.
Lower Systemic Inflammation → Reduces the risk of autoimmune diseases, chronic pain, and inflammatory disorders.

Longevity & Overall Health
Slows Aging → Lowers oxidative stress, reduces cell damage, and supports DNA repair.
Promotes Emotional & Social Well-being → A calm nervous system improves mood, relationships, and overall life satisfaction.
Supports Sustainable Energy Levels → Avoids adrenal burnout and maintains steady energy throughout the day.

Through achieving parasympathetic dominance, and with some specific techniques and treatment plans, massage can treat and manage countless health conditions.
